Sean; Less Than Relaxing Saturday

Sean's doctor's appointment Friday went well. The doctor said he looks "very good". He weighs 79.8 lbs. and is 53½ inches tall. He has me to blame for his shortness - I'm only 5'0". The doctor said that once Sean really starts puberty (he's barely started) they could check his hormones and see if there's a problem, in which case they could give him growth hormones, or if he's just going to be a short man. Once puberty is done, there's nothing they can do about his height.

Sean had to get a shot for some disease I've never heard of. (It starts with an M.) Something about blood under the skin. It has a 50% mortality rate and those who survive usually lose their finger tips and other not-so-nice things happen to them. A senior at a nearby high school (he was the class president, I think) got the disease a few years back and died from it.

Anyway, as we were leaving the doctor's office, Charlie called and asked if I wanted to get something to eat. It was 12:30 or so and we were all pretty hungry, so I said "yes". We decided to meet at Monterrey's. (The best Mexican food I've had in Greensboro or any other city.) My mom was with us and wanted to know which waiter was Flirty Waiter (scroll down to Label Cloud, click "Monterrey's"), but he wasn't there that I could see.

After getting home around 2:00/2:30, Kelly and I went to Barnes and Noble. I got Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict by Laurie Viera Rigler, Becoming Jane Austen by Joe Spence and Tuscany Style (mostly pictures) by Angelika Taschen. Kelly got two books (a story about unicorns and something else) and I got Sean a Transformers book. (I bought A Summer Affair by Elin Hilderbrand and The Wind Comes Sweeping by Marcia Preston at Borders on Thursday. Kelly got the second in the Warriors series.)

I thought yesterday would be a day of relaxation. I was looking forward to not having to go anywhere. But then Charlie decided he wanted to get the car detailed and had me find a place to get that done. When he and Sean got home from Elizabeth's Pizza (I had made pancakes and that's what Kelly & I ate), we went to Golden Touch and dropped off the car.

On the way home (in Charlie's work truck), Charlie decided to find a Verizon store and look into switching cell service. We had AT&T and were no longer satisfied with them. When AT&T bought out Cingular, our cell phone bill mysteriously went up about $20 a month though our phone usage had remained the same. We had tried to get that straightened out, but our bill didn't go down. :-/

So now we're with Verizon and, of course, that meant having to get a new phone. I liked my pretty red LG Shine, but I couldn't keep it. My new phone is the LG Env3 in a maroon color.

Not long after getting home from the Verizon store, Golden Touch called and said that our car was ready, so we went and got it. Charlie went on home (Sean was at Mom's by this time), while Kelly and I went by the grocery store to get stuff for French bread pizza for supper tonight.

I had taken a whole chicken out for supper last night, and when I got home from the store it was thawed out and ready to be cooked. I cleaned it, seasoned it and put it in the oven. Almost 2 hours later, it was done. We ate it with Uncle Ben's chicken rice, black eyed peas and broccoli (Kelly's favorite vegetable). It was a very good supper, even if I do say so myself. :-D

I ended up falling asleep on the couch a little after 11:00 and woke up close to 3:00 AM. I then cleaned the kitchen, mopped the floor and got online. And now I need to go to bed for a few more hours' sleep. After which I will get laundry done and pack our things for this week's trip to Kure Beach.

Busy Day, Snip, Pizza Place Profanity

Charlie had to get up early yesterday morning (7:00) for his chiropractor appointment, and naturally his alarm woke me up and I couldn't get back to sleep. I got less than four hours. *yawn*

I drug myself out of bed at 9:00 AM, took a shower (Charlie got home while I was showering), got ready, fixed Kelly's hair and we all left for two doctors' appointments. Charlie and Kelly both had appointments at 11:30 at two different doctors' offices. I dropped Charlie off at his doctor's office (Sean went with him) and then took Kelly to hers about 10 minutes away.

Kelly's doctor took forever to get to the exam room. (After the nurse or P.A. checked Kelly's blood pressure, hearing, eyesight, weight - 62.5 lbs - and height - 51 inches.) We waited close to an hour. He checked all the usual things (heart, lungs, eyes, ears, throat, etc.) and all is "perfect". He said that her height and weight go together perfectly and also talked to her about puberty and boys. Yes, at 9 years old, she's already entering that stage of life. Ahh, too soon! But it's a tiny step so far. (I'm being deliberately vague, of course.) Hopefully things won't speed up anytime soon. Especially for Daddy's sake.

Kelly had to get a shot for Hepatitis A. She didn't like that too much, but she got over it quickly enough.

When we finally got out of the doctor's office, it was nearly 1:00. I sent Charlie a quick text that I was on my way (thinking he may have been waiting a long time) and got to his doctor's office less than 10 minutes later. He told me that he had only been waiting for a couple minutes before I got there. I was glad of that.

Oh, and the nature of his doctor's visit? Not an annual exam. He rarely gets those done. No, it was for the purpose of preventing further pregnancies. :-/

I always wanted a third child and we tried for a few years before I found out that I have PCOS and could no longer get pregnant. Though I suppose there are drugs that could help. We never looked into it however. I know that there is the possibility of multiples with fertility drugs and I doubt Charlie would've liked that much. (Not that he wouldn't love the babies, of course.) I'm not so sure I could've handled it, but you never know what you can handle until you're actually in a situation.

Anyway, Charlie effectively put an end to the baby making, thinking he's too old for us to have anymore. He's only 40. :-/

Moving on.

After getting Charlie and Sean, we went to CVS to get Charlie's Percocet prescription filled. They said it would be about 15 minutes, so Kelly and I waited. (Charlie and Sean were in the car.) After a few minutes, they said that they didn't have it in the strength and amount the doctor prescribed, so they called the doctor and were waiting to hear back. Well, I know how doctors' offices can be, so I told them I'd come back later.

By this time we were all starving (none of us had eaten), so we went to Pizzeria L'Italiano downtown. (The best pizza in Greensboro, in my opinion.) I dropped Charlie off at the door, parked in the parking deck behind the restaurant and the kids and I walked around to the restaurant.

Charlie had already ordered the pizza and drinks (done at the counter), so we all sat down and waited. I didn't notice the song that was on when we came in, but minutes after sitting down at our table, a rap song came on. I don't really mind rap, but this song just wasn't sounding great. Then there was mother f-ing this, f that, the S word, the N word. Ugh.

I called to the lady sweeping, "Excuse me, ma'am. I think I just heard the F word a couple times."

Sweeping lady: "You did?"

Me: "Yes."

So she went to the back and apparently told someone back there. A few seconds later, the music was changed to something different. A little too mellow/lame for my tastes, but a heck of a lot better than the awful song that had been playing.

We got our pizza, which was so good, and then left for CVS. I pulled up to the prescription window and was told that they were still waiting to hear from the doctor's office. So we headed home and Charlie called the doctor's office on the way, telling them about the situation. They told him to take the prescription somewhere else. :-/

I left Charlie and Sean home and Kelly and I went to Rite Aid. We walked around the drug store while we waited for the prescription to be ready. Of course, that meant that I picked up a few extra things. Lindt hazelnut chocolate, two bags of nacho cheese Combos (hard to find), a pick/comb and Hannah Montana vitamins for Kelly. (Her doctor had told me that the recommended amount of Vitamin D for kids had gone up and that kids would have to drink a gallon of milk a day to get it. So he told me to give her vitamins.)

After a few minutes, the Rite Aid pharmacy told me the same thing the CVS pharmacy told me and they too had to wait to hear back from Charlie's doctor. *sigh* A few more minutes later and things got worked out and I got Charlie's medicine.

From Rite Aid, I had to go to Food Lion to get frozen peas for Charlie. *ahem* I also got some muffin mix (blueberry, lemon poppy seed, blueberry cheesecake) and red grapes.

Charlie took his medicine soon after I got home with it and then we all watched a movie - Monters, Inc. After which, I had to go to bed for a nap. It was nearly 7:00 PM by this time. I don't know how I made it that long without falling out. I ended up sleeping about 3 hours or so and had to make myself get up. I knew that if I stayed in bed I would end up sleeping until 3:00 or 4:00 AM and then be so awake that I wouldn't be tired again until this evening.

----------------------------
Charlie has a chiropractor's appointment again today at 8:30 AM.

At 2:00, I have an appointment with State Farm. They want to talk about life insurance for the kids. It won't bother me if I miss it though. I just didn't want to tell them "no" when they called about it last week. I also have to get groceries today.

On Friday, Charlie has a 12:00 appointment with his doctor and Sean has an 11:30 appointment with his doctor. I may let Charlie have the car and have my mom drive the kids and I to the pediatrician.

No plans on Saturday or Sunday, but on Monday (after Charlie's early morning appointment with either his doctor or the chiropractor - I can't even remember which), we're leaving for Kure Beach and will be back on July 3rd.

Names

You Like Names that Are Retro and Fashionable

You like names that are from the past but becoming modern again.
Names with a strong history are very appealing to you.

You're a big believer in giving children very adult sounding names.
You're not a fan of made-up names or newfangled spellings.

Some female names you might like: Audrey, Emma, Fiona, Ava, Elena, Tessa, Emily, and Madeleine.

Some male names you might like: Brendan, Colin, Ethan, Liam, Sean, Dominic, Luke and Nathaniel

What Kind of Names Do You Like?

I'm a self-proclaimed name nerd with strong opinions about names. I'll try not to name any specific names that I dislike, even hate, so as not to offend anyone who has one of those names or who have given their children those names.

Types of names I dislike or hate: Clearly masculine names on girls, Mc/Mac names on girls (Mc means "son of"; Mac means either "son of" or "grandson of"; since girls aren't sons or grandsons, I don't like Mc/Mac names for them; plus they sound better as last names), non-traditional spellings (it just looks ignorant, in my opinion; sorry), last names as first names, non-name names (things found in nature, objects, attitudes or personality traits), with few exceptions.

My favorite names (besides my kids' names) are:

Girls: Tessa, Linnea (lyn-nay-uh), Fiona, Ava (what I would've named another girl if I'd had one), Elena (ee-lay-nuh), Anwen, Emily, Elliana, Katerina, Adriana (ay-dree-ah-nuh), Tatiana, Ariana, Elsa, Emma, Juliet, Madeleine, Aimee, Lisette, Gwendolen, Lila, Maya, Saoirse (seer-shuh; Irish; means "freedom"; a middle name choice if I'd had another girl), Roisin (ro-sheen; Irish; means "rose"; another middle name choice if I'd had another girl), Juliana, Aine (on-yuh; Irish), Ciara (keer-uh; Irish), Rhona, Anya (on-yuh), Emmaline, Audrey.

Boys: Declan (Irish; first name choice if we'd had another boy), Brendan (first name choice if we'd had another boy), Liam, Devin, Luke, Josiah, Nikolai, Dominic, Antonio, Alejandro, Ian, Jonah, Logan, Matthew, Evan, Brett, Dante, Nathan, Aidan, Nathaniel, Joseph, Jonathan, Dimitri, Demetrius, Ronan, Colin, Rhys (reese; Welsh), Malachy (mal-uh-key; Irish), Conall, Ethan.

It was names that brought me and a great group of ladies together about five years ago. We had met at BabyCenter at the name polls in the comments' section. After communicating there for awhile, we started a private group at YahooGroups in May of 2004 and have been chatting ever since.

We have been through a lot together. Births, deaths (including the spouse of one lady and the baby of another), celebrations, good times, bad times. We talk about everything from names to our families to sex to religion and politics to pretty much everything under the sun. We've sent each other Christmas cards, gifts, post cards, and other things. Some of us have met and spent time together. We're spread out across the country (California, Washington, Massachusetts, South Dakota, North Carolina, Georgia, Maryland, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York) and one is in Canada. Four of them (Amber, Susanne, Carmen and Joni) are in my blogroll.

These ladies mean a lot to me. And I have being a name nerd to thank for bringing us together. :-)

--------------------------------

Kelly and I got groceries yesterday, went out to Bianca's for supper, and went to Borders for books. (Sean hasn't been feeling well and was at my mom's. He wouldn't have gone with us anyway. He doesn't like shopping. Not even for groceries.) I got The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe and Kelly got the first of the Warriors books, about warrior cats apparently. She's a few chapters into it and likes it.

Charlie went to South Carolina on Wednesday and hopes to be home by tonight. I want us to go on a date either tonight or tomorrow night, whenever he's able.

Awards and Graduation

Charlie came home on Wednesday. He had been in Texas for a little over a month. It's good to have him home.

Thursday was the awards ceremony at scho
ol for all but the fifth graders (done on Friday) and Kindergarteners. My mom and I went for Kelly. First and second graders had their ceremony at 8:30 AM. Kelly got five awards: Class Spelling Bee (3rd place - she didn't study for it and said that she didn't want to participate, but apparently she did; not bad for not studying), Music, Top Speller (for outstanding scores in spelling - she made a 100 or better on all but one or two tests; on those she scored in the 90s), Pride in Work, and Homework. She also got a certificate for passing 2nd grade.

The lighting isn't that great in the auditorium.

I had only gotten about four hours sleep the night before (had a hard time sleeping), so when I got home from the awards ceremony around 9:30, I laid down on the couch to take a nap. I was so tired, but I couldn't sleep. After about an hour or so, I got up and made some lunch - homemade macaroni and cheese. Charlie didn't work that day (doctor's appointment and got tires for the car), so he ate lunch with me.

I tried again to fall asleep on the couch, then moved to my bed to see if that helped. I finally fell asleep around 1:00, 1:30; got up around 3:00. Charlie had gone to his chiropractor's appointment by this time (appointment was at 2:45). That took longer than expected (over an hour) because he had to go to the general practitioners office to get his x-rays after arriving at the chiropractor's, and then go back to the chiropractor's for treatment. Charlie's been hurting in his neck for a few years now and got it looked at a month or so ago. He fou
nd out on Thursday that the pain is caused by some kind of disk problem. I don't remember the details. I think he has to go back to the chiropractor's this week.

Anyway, after leaving the chiropractor's office, Charlie went to get the new tires put on before finally coming home at nearly 6:00 PM. I still had to get groceries and left soon after he got home. (We only have one car, since he drives a company truck for work.) I went to Target, Best Buy (New In Town on
Blu-Ray) and Food Lion, and got gas, as quickly as I could.

When I got home and got the groceries put away, Charlie, the kids and I went to Monterrey's for supper. I made the kids get in bed as soon as we got back home.

------------------------
Friday was graduation for the fifth graders. We weren't sure if Sean was going to graduate or not. We hadn't found out yet if Sean had passed his math EOG retake. He went ahead and dressed for the occasion anyway an
d I prayed it wouldn't be for nothing. Mom called the school an hour or so later and was told that all fifth graders would get to walk on stage for the ceremony.

Graduation was at 11:30. Charlie, Mom and I, of course, went for the ceremony. It was while waiting for things to get started that we found out that Sean had failed his math EOG again and, again, by one point. I was heartbroken for Sean and had to fight back tears. To make passing grades on your report card (Sean got straight Cs and Satisfactories), but fail your grade anyway over one test is unfair and ridiculous. They really need to do away with EOGs. Especially for
elementary school kids. We didn't have EOGs when I was in school. We had exams in high school only, which makes a heck of a lot more sense.

Sean sat with his class in the auditorium, just a couple rows behind us and to our right, but I couldn't look at him without getting choked up. I had to keep looking forward, choking back the knot in my throat
and biting my lip. I felt silly for getting so emotional over it, but I couldn't help it.

When Sean's class was called, they all walked onto the stage and were given "diplomas". All the parents clapped and cheered. I clapped for Sean and tried not to cry.

After the ceremony, we walked to Sean's class and talked to his teacher. "What's going to happen now?" Mr. Airo said that they would probably send Sean to sixth grade. That they shouldn't hold Sean back since he only missed passing by one point and since he scored a 2. A score of 1 is the worst a student can get, 3 is passing, 4 is best. I guess 2 is in some weird limbo. Sean's teacher seems confident that Sean will go on to sixth grade. I wish I could feel as confident. I'm waiting to hear something official from the school.

We got Kelly from her class after talking to Sean's teacher (it was about 1:00 or 1:30 by this time) and went to Olive Garden to eat after stopping by the house.

We then went to Borders where I got two books (Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl and Love and War - part II of the North and South series). Kelly got two Magic Tree House books.

I had been wanting to take the kids to see Up for awhile now, so we went to the theater after leaving Borders. It was a cute movie. I had read reviews that said to bring plenty of tissue, yet I, who am an emotional person who cries over movies, songs, and commercials pretty easily, never felt the urge to cry. *shrug*

Next, we went to Target where Sean got a Bumblebee Transformer from the new Transformers movie coming out at the end of the month.

After one more stop (Food Lion), we finally came home. It was still fairly early (around 5:00 or 6:00), so we had time to relax and the kids had time to play before going to bed. Charlie and I watched some TV and I think a movie, but I can't remember what.

-----------------------
Today was the last day of school, but I didn't send the kids. Sean hasn't felt well today and has a low grade fever, so he wouldn't have gone anyway. Mom brought Kelly to school in the afternoon to get her report card (Outstandings, Satisfactories, all things at or above grade level) and a couple other things she had forgotten on Friday.

I've done a little cleaning today and will be making supper soon. We're having lasagna.

Charlie will probably be going to South Carolina tomorrow. I don't know how long he'll be gone this time. Hopefully he can come back home on Wednesday.

This and That; Bad Tooth Fairy

My brother Del came over with his step-son (7 year old Zach) on Saturday to remove the flat tire on my car and put the spare on it. Sean, Kelly and Zach played outside for a little bit and then played a game on the PS3. Del and Zach were here for about an hour or so before going home. Zach was wanting to go swimming in the pool at their apartment complex. Sean liked the sound of that, so I let him go with them. Del brought Sean back home a few hours later (close to 5:00). Sean was a little sunburned on his back. Forgetful me didn't even think about telling Sean to make sure he puts on sunscreen. It's not a bad burn though. He's not hurting from it.

Saturday was also the 65th anniversary of the D-Day invasion of Normandy. I watched the first couple episodes of Band of Brothers (on Blu-Ray) in honor of that day. I've been watching an episode or two a night, after the kids are asleep. Just three more episodes to go.

-----------------------------
The kids and I went to church Sunday night. It was a good service. I especially enjoyed the singing and worship.

-----------------------------
Yesterday was Field Day at the kids' school. Kelly came home with a sunburn on her face and arms. :-/ Seems like she got a sunburn on last year's Field Day also.

-----------------------------
My brother said something about getting my flat tire (which has a screw in it) plugged or patched. I'm going to try to get that done today. I haven't been driving a whole lot on the spare, but it makes me nervous. I also need to pick up a few things at the grocery store.

-----------------------------
Charlie is supposed to be leaving Texas this morning and coming home. He thought he might have to go to Iowa to replace some guy who apparently has a real attitude problem and was sent away because no one on that job site wants to work with him. Thankfully Charlie gets to come home instead. He should be here sometime tomorrow.

-----------------------------
I don't remember if I wrote here that Sean failed his math EOG a week or so ago by one problem. He has to retake it this week. His teacher says he's confident that Sean will pass, but I'm nervous about it. Fifth grade graduation is this Friday and I'd really like for Sean to be among those moving on to sixth grade.

Thursday is awards day for all grades except fifth. (They probably get their awards on Friday.) Kelly usually gets several awards.

-----------------------------
My aunt Wanda, who lives near the TN/KY line (though I can't remember which state she lives in), flew in yesterday. She's my mom's oldest sister (and I think the oldest among them and their siblings) and is staying at her house. They'll be going to Fayetteville in a couple days to visit the rest of their clan.

----------------------------
Kelly lost a tooth last night. It had been loose for quite awhile and the permanent tooth was coming in behind it. (The last two baby teeth she lost also had the permanent teeth coming in behind them by the time she lost them.) Apparently, she had bent over while lying on her bed and somehow hit her mouth on the metal bed frame and made it looser, to the point that it was bleeding a little and the tooth was sticking almost straight out. *shudder* Well, I don't do teeth. No tooth she or Sean have ever lost has been pulled by me. I just can't handle it. Call me a wimp if you like. Whatever. It just gives me the heebee jeebies.

So I called my mom (who has pulled all my kids' teeth, except for the one or two that came out on their own) and she and Aunt Wanda came over for the second time last night. (She lives less than 2 miles from me, so it's not a hassle for her really.) It didn't take long. Mom said she barely touched the tooth and it fell out in her hand.

But now I have a problem. I don't have any money to leave Kelly for her tooth. She knows I'm the Tooth Fairy and she'll ask me in the morning (in a few hours) why there wasn't any money under her pillow. Well, she'll just have to wait until I can break the twenty I have. The last couple times she's lost a tooth (the last one came out when she bit into a breadstick at Olive Garden) I've forgotten to leave money under her pillow until the second or third night. lol If I were a real Tooth Fairy the boss fairy would fire me.

Duck weather, Bike thief, Flat tire

I don't like getting groceries in the rain, so since it was forecasted to rain today and yesterday, but not Wednesday, I got groceries on Wednesday. And wouldn't you know it, it rained. I barely beat the storm. The wind was whipping around, lightning was flashing now and then, and thunder was rolling as I unloaded the car. It began to rain shortly after I got all the groceries into the house. It had rained a little while I was out shopping. The worst of it held off until I got home.

We've gotten so much rain since Wednesday that areas of the city flooded. (Including a park, which looked more like a slow flowing river. The ducks loved it.) Thankfully none where we live. It never floods on this side. Our house is on the top of a small hill, so we feel pretty safe from flooding.

----------------------
My brother came over to cut our grass on Wednesday. (Before the rains came.) While he was in the backyard he saw that Sean's bike was gone. The one we got him for Christmas. Someone stole my son's bike. *insert angry smilie here* When Charlie gets back from Texas (maybe Tuesday or Wednesday), we're going to get Sean a new bike and chain up his and Kelly's bikes. Unfortunately, we don't have room for them in the garage or the storage building.

-----------------------
On the way home from bringing Sean to school this morning (Kelly stayed home because she said she had a sore throat and a headache), I saw a bike in the backyard of a neighbor (who moved out about a month ago) two doors down and wondered if it was Sean's. After getting home, I went to check it out and saw that there are actually two bikes there. Neither of which are Sean's. :-/

While outside, I saw that one of my car's back tires is going flat. I couldn't see anything in the tire, so I rolled it back a little, checked again and saw something metal in it. There were air bubbles (because it's wet out) coming out from where the piece of metal is. *sigh* Great.

I can't change a tire and even if I could, it's raining too much to do that today. A friend picked up Sean from school and my brother is going to try to come by tomorrow to put the spare tire on my car. I reckon Charlie'll get the tire replaced when he gets home. We also need new tires on the front of the car.

It's been a wet and frustrating few days.

Mom Mama Mum Mommy

I found this video at the Reasons to be Happy You Don't Have Kids blog, via the My Kids Might be Martians blog. I'm not a fan of Family Guy, but this clip is very funny.
