It was such a pretty day today, mostly cloudy and barely above 70°, that I decided to go to the park (Hagan-Stone) in Pleasant Garden after getting Kelly from school. My mom would be picking up Sean from his school since it was her day off.
After getting Kelly and coming by the house for a pit stop, we headed for the park. We drove to the shelter 4 parking area where the start of a trail is. It eventually leads to an old one-room schoolhouse replica and continues on from there, with a couple other trails branching off from it. The trail eventually ends at a picnic area and a small field, with more trees and a campground beyond.
At one point in the trail, you're deep enough in the woods (or so it seems) that you can no longer see the sky between the trees. (Though of course you can if you look up.) And it gets beautifully quiet. All you can hear is the sound of the wind in the trees, singing birds and the occasional rustling of a small animal on the ground.
Kelly and I stopped often just to look and listen and smell. I love the smell of the woods. It's comforting and peaceful.
We only came across three people on the trails for the hour or so that we were out there. A couple and then later a man by himself. I much prefer visiting during the week when your chances of being alone are greater.
When we returned to the gravel parking area where our car was parked, we continued walking past it to the large pond that was closeby. When we reached the water, a group of about ten geese that had been in the small field on the other side of the pond flew over to where we were. You could hear their wings as they came in for a landing on the water. Then they let down their feet like landing gear and landed with a splash. They swam over to within two or three feet of us, probably expecting us to feed them, and began drinking water. You could hear the sound of their sipping and swallowing. It was cute.
Kelly and I then walked on near the large pond, past the picnic shelter and beyond a small sheltered bench and onto a wide trail. We soon reached a sign that let us know that it was the other half of a trail that we had been on earlier, so we turned around and walked back.
As we came to the spot near where the geese had landed, we saw a woman (probably in her 40s) sitting on a bench. She had a young dog (Beagle mix possibly) with her named Brandy. Kelly of course wanted to pet the dog. I told her to ask first, which she did, and the lady said that she could. The woman, whose name was Andrea (an-DREE-uh, it sounded like she said), is from Germany and is visiting friends in Pleasant Garden (where the park is located) and will be here for a week. She lives in or near Frankfurt. She was a nice lady and we talked for awhile. There were a few times when she couldn't think of the English word for something (such as "University" when trying to explain that her 18-year-old daughter is in her "13th year" and will be going to college/university next year) and I would help her. :-)
Not wanting to become a bother, I told Kelly it was time to go after a little while and we went back to our car and came home.
Altogether, we spent about two hours at the park. We both would've liked to have stayed longer, but my stomach was growling and Kelly's bladder was getting full. We want to go back on another almost-cool day after school and have a picnic. Kelly's really looking forward to that. I'll choose a day when Sean can be with us also. I think he too would really enjoy it.
