Merry Christmas!

At a little after midnight, the kids opened their presents. They didn't ask for much this year, so there weren't a lot of presents to open.

We got Sean two games (Red Dead Redemption 2 and For Honor: Marching Fire), a lamp for his nightstand, Carolina Panthers calendar, and a PS4 year's subscription. I wanted to also get him a Panthers toboggan (knit hat, to non-Southerners), and maybe a couple other Panthers things, but I'm going to let him pick what he wants.

We got Kelly two Funko Pop figures (Master Chief from the Halo games and some Star Wars character called Ahsoka, from a Star Wars cartoon), a Fantastic Beasts creature (Bowtruckle), a stuffed dragon from Harry Potter (Hungarian Horntail), a couple pairs of house socks/footies (one pair covered with cat faces and one pair with panda faces over the toes), a video game (Battlefield V; Sean has this one already and now they can play together), and a really small stuffed, gray cat (2-3 inches high) that she wanted.

They both also got candy in their stockings.

I got Charlie a medium/dark blue dress shirt from Dillard's (I want to get him something else, too) and I got my brother a black, button-up, casual, long-sleeved shirt. I got my mom three ornaments from World Market for her tree. All purple, her favorite color. A heart with gold swirls on it, a peacock, and a hummingbird. She loved them.

I got the Loki purse and Loki sticker (gold helmet) for my car that I've been wanting for awhile (from Charlie and the kids), and money from my mom. She gave the kids and Charlie money, too.

For Christmas dinner, I'll be making roast chicken, stuffing, green beans, black eyed peas, and crescent rolls. Dessert is chocolate cream pie and apple pie.

If anyone reads this, may your Christmas be merry and peaceful, and may you be with those you love.

Hurricane, Jury Summons, Snow, Etc.

This past October, Hurricane Michael made landfall in Florida. (The devastation was incredible.) It was a tropical storm when it reached North Carolina on October 11th. It still had a lot of wind and rain in it. We lost power for a couple days (technically about 45½ hours), but thankfully we had a generator. (Our first time having one. Too bad we didn't have one when we lost power during an ice storm in early March 2014.) Many places in NC flooded. It hadn't been that long ago that Hurricane Florence hit North Carolina, and we'd had a lot of rain before and after Florence. The ground was pretty much saturated, which not only caused flooding, but many trees came down. About 500,000 people were without power in North Carolina. The county I live in had the most power outages.

Our generator isn't powerful enough to run a lot of things in our house, but we were able to keep the refrigerator running, a few lamps, some small fans, the TV, cable, and WiFi, use the microwave (if we unplugged the refrigerator first), and keep our phones charged. Thankfully, it wasn't hot out, so the fans were enough for those couple days that we didn't have power.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I made a quick trip to Hagan-Stone Park on November 3rd to get some pretty fall pictures. We've had so much rain over the past few months that it's been too muddy to walk the trails, so I had to take pictures from less muddy spots. I would've loved to have been able to go deeper into the woods to get pictures.
A couple months ago, I got a jury summons in the mail. Ugh. I was dreading it so much. I get a summons every couple of years, but only once have I actually had to go. This last summons was for the courthouse in High Point. I understand it's in the same county I'm in, but I don't live in High Point and rarely go there. I think the last time I was there was about two years ago. Prior to that, I can't remember how long it had been. I received a summons for the High Point courthouse once before, but thankfully when I called the night before, I was told that my services weren't needed. I got the same message when I called tonight. As I was listening to the recording, Charlie was standing near me and when they said my services weren't needed, I raised my fist up in the air and said, "Yes!" Charlie laughed. lol I am so happy I don't have to go!
The one time I did have to go, it was the courthouse in Greensboro. It was a long, boring day. I hated every minute of it. Thankfully my name was never called to go back to whatever the other room is. A selection room of some kind, I imagine. At one point, we were allowed to leave the assembly room for a break. I went to the break room to get water and a small bag of pretzels and as I was sitting there, I started feeling sick and faint. All those boring hours on an empty stomach and not much sleep. I don't do well in such situations.
Anyway, I find it interesting that Charlie has received a summons only once and has only voted once or twice. I vote every election and get a summons every couple of years. Charlie said he heard that they don't choose based on who votes, but I don't believe them. lol
About mid to late October, I brought Pippin to the vet for his bi-annual check-up. At this visit, we found out he has congestive heart failure and his liver and kidneys are starting to not do so great. (He also had the giardia parasite, but medication took care of that.) He's now on heart medication and fluid pills. I've had to bring him to the vet every couple weeks since then and I'm really tired of going. It's been a couple weeks since the last vet visit. Hopefully I won't have to take him again for awhile. Milo is passed due for his check-up, but I haven't been able to take him because of Pippin's visits and the cost involved in that. *sigh*
On November 27th, I got a text from my bank about suspicious activity in my account. Someone in Paris somehow got my information and attempted to purchase several things. Only a couple went through because I didn't have much in the bank, so most of their purchases were declined. Some of the purchases were some kind of Hobbiton movie set, an expensive dinner, and a boat cruise on the Seine. I went to the bank that Friday to get a temporary card to use until my new card arrived in the mail. The bank is currently reviewing the case. Surely they'll see that I didn't buy stuff in Paris one day, then get groceries in NC the next, then take a boat cruise in Paris after that.
Sunday, December 9th, around midnight, a winter storm hit North Carolina. It snowed all night (Saturday night/Sunday morning) and all day Sunday. Then turned into sleet and freezing rain Sunday night, and then we got a little bit more snow on top of that. We got about a foot of snow where I live. The kind of snow we get about once every 10 years. Needless to say, everything shut down.
When they finally got to our neighborhood to plow, they only did about half of our street. I have no idea why. They stopped a couple houses before our house. I had to be careful getting out today to bring Kelly to the dentist.
We're supposed to get rain Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (seriously? more rain?!) and the temperature Sunday is supposed to be near 60°. So hopefully the snow will melt soon. Though with it being a foot high and the piles where they've plowed are higher than that (I heard 10 feet high in some places!), who knows when it will all be gone.
Monday, December 10th, we got the news that Charlie's aunt Louise in Tennessee passed away that morning. She was 80 years old. She had been battling cancer for awhile, but it didn't seem like she was sick enough to die yet. She seemed in good spirits, smiling a lot, from the pictures her daughter was sharing on Facebook. Her death was a sad surprise.
The funeral is tomorrow (Thursday). Charlie would like to go, but he can't because he's the only one who will be at work. Others have taken time off/vacation time and they need someone there.
Charlie had said several times over the past few months that he'd like to go visit his uncle Richard and aunt Louise and family whenever we get the chance. It's been awhile since he's seen them and he misses them. Now if we ever get to go, he won't get to see his aunt Louise. He really loved her. :-(
Since my last entry, I stopped reading Seven Stones to Stand or Fall by Diana Gabaldon and read two other books. Warm Bodies and The New Hunger. Both by Isaac Marion. I ordered the third book (The Burning World) from Barnes and Noble almost a week ago, but haven't gotten an email yet telling me that it's come in. The fourth book (The Living) is only available digitally through Amazon and Barnes and Noble. I don't read digital books. I went to GoodReads and found out that you can order the hardcover from the author's website. I'm waiting for that to be shipped.
I will end this already kind of long entry with a picture of our Christmas tree. :-)
Mountains, Pippin, Cool Wallet, Books, and Music
I've been meaning to post a new entry for awhile, but haven't felt like writing until now.
Wednesday, October 24th, Charlie, Sean, Kelly, Ashley, and I went to the mountains for the day. It was a little chilly (50s, to near 60°), but beautiful. We did our usual route - 40W to 52N to Fancy Gap, VA, then got on the Parkway and headed south to Boone.
Here are some of the pictures I took:
In Virginia.
Virginia.
Stone Mountain Overlook. North Carolina.
View of Stone Mountain, across the street from Mahogany Rock Overlook.
Perhaps Air Bellows overlook.
Alligator Back overlook.
Trail at Alligator Back.
Charlie, Kelly, Ashley, and Sean. Alligator Back.
At Bluff Mountain overlook. There's a nice trail that leads to a stream at this overlook.
The Lump overlook. Yes, we climbed the hill, as we always do.
At Dan'l Boone Inn Restaurant.
I brought Pippin to the vet for his bi-annual check up last month. (Bi-annual because he's a senior dog.) Poor old man is starting to have some health problems. *sigh* We knew about the collapsing trachea from his spring vet visit, but now he also has congestive heart failure, fluid in his lungs, and his kidneys and liver aren't doing great. He's on heart medication now, as well as fluid pills. He also tested positive for giardia (a parasite), but we gave him medicine for that. His kidneys and liver aren't doing bad enough to require medication. Hopefully they won't get to that point. He's been to the vet every couple weeks since then and, honestly, I'm really sick of going there. He has to go back again this Monday. :-/ Milo is due for his annual exam, too. If they'd ever stop asking me to bring Pippin back for whatever, I can bring Milo.
I ordered a Loki wallet from Loungefly a few weeks ago. I love it! Now I want the purse. :-) And a Loki decal for my car.
Since my last entry, I finished Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman. Very good book. Can't wait for the third and final book in the trilogy to come out next year.
I then read more of Seven Stones to Stand or Fall by Diana Gabaldon (short stories about minor characters from her big books) and then I read The Kept by James Scott. It started off interesting enough, then dragged once the two main characters reached a town they went to trying to find the men who killed their family. The ending was awful, in my opinion. They never completed what they set out to do. The book ended right in the middle of an important scene. Not in a cliffhanger sort of way, but more like the author got tired of writing and decided to stop, to paraphrase a reviewer. The book came out in 2014 and there's no word of a sequel that I've seen, but I doubt I'd be interested in it if there were a sequel. I gave The Kept two stars at GoodReads.
I'm now reading the next story in Seven Stones to Stand or Fall. It's called A Fugitive Green. It's not all that interesting to me, but I'll keep reading. I'm more than halfway through Seven Stones, so I may as well finish it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I've purchased several more songs for my iPod since my last entry.

I went to Hagan-Stone Park a few weeks ago and took pictures. I'll post those in another blog entry.

Florence, Clothes, Books, and Music

Hurricane Florence made landfall on September 14th at Wrightsville Beach, NC. Not far north of my hometown, Southport. Thankfully, it was a category 1 storm and not the 4 or 5 they were expecting. So eastern NC was spared the devastating winds they could've gotten, but because Florence was so slow moving (about 2-3 mph once it made landfall) it dumped tons of rain. There has been a lot of flooding, causing many roads to be washed out and destroying many homes and businesses. Not all the flood waters have receded yet, but I think the rivers have crested and are going down now.

But now do they not only have to rebuild and get water systems working properly, among other things, but they are being swarmed by millions of large mosquitoes. They are spraying to try and kill as many mosquitoes as possible.

Following are clothing purchases I've made from about mid June to late August or early September. So it may look like a lot, but these purchases were made over about a three month period.

Calvin Klein skirt. Purchased at Belk 2-3 months ago.

Reversible top by The Limited. Purchased at Belk 2-3 months ago. I wear a tank under it.

Got this at Hot Topic a couple months ago.

Vera Wang dress from Kohl's. Clearance. Paid about $11-12, over a month ago.

Purchased this at FYE over a month ago.

Khari top from Belk. Purchased about 2-3 months ago. I wear a black shrug over it.

I think I ordered this from FYE. Purchased about 3 months ago.

From FYE or Amazon. Purchased almost 3 months ago.

Khari top from Belk. Paid about $12-15 for it, 2-3 months ago.

Vera Wang dress from Kohl's. Purchased over a month ago. I wear a black shrug over it.

Eliza J dress from Dillard's. Purchased 1-2 months ago.

Blush tank by Soprano, bought to go under the dress above to make it modest. Purchased at Dillard's, after searching several stores for a tank the right color, about a week after buying the dress.

I also bought a blue Wonder Woman T-shirt with a pocket on the left side (my left, when I'm wearing it) at FYE, but I can't find a picture of it.

When I wrote the entry before the one about Sadie, I was reading The Martian. I finished that one and liked it. I've since read A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir (very good), third book in a four-book series, and The Trickster's Lover by Samantha McLeod (it was okay; would've preferred less sex), a book about Loki.

I'm currently reading Seven Stones to Stand or Fall by Diana Gabaldon (short stories), Unfinished Tales by J. R. R. Tolkien, and Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman, second book in a trilogy.

The last time I listed new iPod song purchases was October of last year. I've bought several more songs since then.

Goodbye, Sadie May

Sadie May
April 2002 - July 3, 2018

I almost wrote this last week, but I wasn't quite ready.

Sadie was diagnosed with kidney failure last August when I brought her to the vet for a urinary tract infection. The vet said it could be months or years before she passes. It moves at a different pace for each cat.

As the months went by, Sadie got thinner, but still seemed happy. But then she stopped grooming herself a few months ago and began to smell bad. I thought maybe I'd have to risk bathing her. (She would not have liked that at all and I probably would've ended up bleeding. lol) But I didn't work up the courage to do that before it was too late.

Around the third week of June, Sadie started eating even less than she was before, so I gave her some canned cat food, which she's had before, and she liked it, but it took her a week to eat one small can of it. By the last few days of June, she stopped eating completely. The vet had said that when Sadie stops eating, we'll know it's time. Poor Sadie was a bag of bones by the end.

On July 2nd, she was still showing no interest in food (she'd walk away if I put it in front of her) and began wandering from room to room meowing for no reason. (The kind of meow she would do whenever she was looking for me.) She had been peeing on the floor next to the litter box for about a week by this point and hadn't had a bowel movement in weeks. (Maybe because she was eating next to nothing.) She was also starting to wobble a little bit when she walked. That night, she began meowing and wandering even more (I believe she was looking for a place to die) and if she got on a table or my desk and then jumped down, she would nearly fall. At one point she jumped down from the dining room table, lost her balance, and then laid down.

When she began pawing at the front door and the blinds on the living room window as if she wanted to go outside (something she never did before), I knew that she was probably wanting to go off by herself to die.

I sat here at my desk crying about making the decision to have her put down. I didn't want to rush into that decision, but I also didn't want her to suffer any longer than she had to. She had been slowly getting worse since late last year and it seemed like all of a sudden she was quickly getting much worse. Like in those last days of June and first couple days of July her disease was speeding up, racing downhill towards death. It seemed to happen so fast, get worse so quickly, that I felt like I was being pushed into making the decision to have her put to sleep without much time to think about it.

I had read that as death approached, her symptoms would get worse - seizures, coma, painful death. I really didn't want her to go through that. I didn't want her to suffer all night (not to mention, I couldn't have slept with the loud meowing and knowing she was probably in pain), so I had Sean call the emergency vet, tell them her symptoms, and ask if we could bring Sadie in to be put to sleep. They agreed that it was time and that they would put her to sleep.

Sean went with me to the emergency vet. It was around 1:30 AM or so when we got there. They asked about her symptoms, wrote it all down, and said that, yes, it's time. They let us spend some time alone with her to say our goodbyes. I didn't spend a lot of time doing that because of her suffering, but I petted her, cried, told her I loved her, and that I was sorry she had gotten so sick and sorry that we had to do this.

Sean left the room we were in to let them know we were ready (though not really ready) and a vet came to take her away. I cried some more and then went to the front desk to pay for the procedure. I asked if they do it right away or if there are other things they do first and the lady at the front desk said that as soon as they bring a pet to the back to put them to sleep, one person will hold them and pet them while another person puts them to sleep. So, Sadie was probably already gone while I was talking to the receptionist. So, sometime after 2:00 AM on July 3rd.

It's been strange not having her here. We had her almost 16 years. (It would've been 16 years on September 19th.) There will never be another cat like Sadie. She was one of a kind. Started off so silly, like most kittens, then became kind of evil. lol I called her Beast, Evil One, Evilest One, and Satan for a reason. lol (Though, truthfully, I've heard of much meaner cats.) But she was also really sweet. I learned to read her pretty well and could tell when she didn't want to be messed with and when she'd had enough when you were petting her. lol She was still kind of feisty last summer and fall (the vet even said that she was, but that she liked her spirit and attitude lol), but mellowed quite a bit in her last few months and wanted attention from me all the time. She would lie or sit near me on the couch or sit in front of me on my desk when I was on the computer. I loved when she'd put the top of her head against me and purr.

As sad as this has been, it hasn't been as hard to deal with as Evie and Sam dying. With them, we thought there was a chance they could get better and be okay, but then Evie died (July 3, 2016) on the way to the emergency vet and Sam wouldn't get better and we had to put him to sleep (January 2, 2017). Their deaths were more unexpected, more of a shock. But we had time to prepare for Sadie's death. Nearly every week I'd wonder if this was the week or month we'd lose her. We knew that there was no getting better for her, so we weren't holding on to false hope. It's like those last months of her life were her saying goodbye to us and us saying goodbye to her. It felt like a relief when I had her put to sleep, though it broke my heart. Not a relief that she's gone, but that she's no longer sick and suffering.

I will miss my Beast. She was mean, she was sweet, she was funny, she had serious cattitude.

I will miss her chirping meows, the crazy throaty meows on the rare occasion when she'd have a running fit, the meows where no sound came out lol, and the meows that sounded like a question when she was looking for me.

I will miss her putting the top of her head against me, wanting to love me and be petted by me, and purring.

I will miss seeing her drink with her paw.

I will miss her sitting in front of me on my desk and purring. Sometimes looking away, sometimes looking me right in the face. lol

I will miss her occasionally giving me kisses on my hands.

I will miss how, even when she got really skinny, she would look all puffy and fluffy sometimes when she sat down on the coffee table.

I will miss her beautiful, shiny black fur and beautiful, yellow-green eyes.

Other nicknames I had for her other than Beast, Evil One, Evilest One, and Satan: Beasty Butt, Beast from the East, Beast of Burden, Beaster, Sader(s) Tomater(s), Maters, Sader. I may be forgetting a couple.

This has been hard to write. I had to stop and cry a few times.

I will end this blog entry with pictures of Sadie.
